Description
Heritage Skies
Sven Arvid Flory came to flying from the sea. He entered the Navy as a cadet in 1901, was commissioned in 1907, and in 1916 took Swedish aviation certificate number 36 at Thulin’s flying school at Ljungbyhed — four years before Elsa Andersson earned hers on the same field.
The years that followed took him abroad repeatedly, studying how aviation was developing elsewhere. When Sweden formed its independent Air Force in 1926, Flory transferred into it and was appointed the first head of the Flying School at Ljungbyhed, a post he held until 1932. From 1932 to 1934 he commanded the Second Air Corps at Hägernäs.
He ended his career far from Ljungbyhed, as naval attaché in Argentina in the mid-1940s. He died in Stockholm on 1 October 1948, aged sixty-three, and lies at Galärvarvskyrkogården.
