Aviation Heritage
Enoch Thulin took his doctorate in aerodynamics at Lund in 1912 and made his first successful flights the same year — the rare pioneer who understood the mathematics as thoroughly as the machine.
By 1914 he had an aeroplane factory running at Landskrona, and he founded the flying school at Ljungbyhed that would become the air force’s F5. It was on that field, the year after his death, that a farmer’s daughter from Strövelstorp named Elsa Andersson became the first woman in Sweden to hold a pilot’s licence.
On 14 May 1919 Thulin was practising in his own K3, south-east of Landskrona harbour, and did not come back. He was thirty-seven. His school outlasted him by most of a century, and his factory outlasted him too — it still makes brake components today.
